Burg’s Big Walk Home 2011

On 14th July 2011, BCT Managing Director Paul Burgum will once again be setting out on the road with his walking boots on. This year Paul has set the even bigger challenge of walking from Kirkwall (Orkney Islands) to his hometown of Billingham (approx 480 miles).

Like last year when he walked from Portsmouth, Paul will take no money or have day to day support, but he will however be joined for the first fourteen day’s by his cousin Tony Burgum.

Tony said:I will be writing a book entitled – It seemed like a good idea at the time (Diary of a Bloody Idiot)”.

The task this year involves passing through the Scottish Highlands and the Cairngorm Mountain range on his way home. There will be less certain places to find accommodation and as such they will be prepared with a tent and camping equipment.

The walk this year will be in memory of Paul’s late uncle, David Crockett who was viciously murdered in 2010. David was a long term alcoholic who was murdered by a heroin addict in the most violent of circumstances.

This has led to Paul choosing to support both BCT and it’s own Youth Work as well as “The Bridges” based in Stockton on Tees. Bridges Family & Carers Support Services offer support to the families and carer’s of people with alcohol and drug problems.

Paul said:It is amazing how many people addiction affects outside of the person themselves and often they are overlooked, my uncle was unable to be helped with his own addiction but as a family we want to take something positive from the situation.”

The walk begins on 14th July 2011 and donations can be made through this website and through other means which will be broadcast in the very near future.
