{"id":1720,"date":"2012-11-13T21:32:13","date_gmt":"2012-11-13T21:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bctaspire.org.uk\/?p=1720"},"modified":"2013-01-10T13:05:34","modified_gmt":"2013-01-10T13:05:34","slug":"billingham-adventurer-completes-sponsored-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bctaspire.org.uk\/?p=1720","title":{"rendered":"Billingham adventurer completes sponsored journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bctaspire.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/paulwalkimage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1721\" title=\"Paul Burgum\" src=\"https:\/\/bctaspire.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/paulwalkimage.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Burgum\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>ADVENTURER Paul Burgum is back home after completing his amazing sponsored journey, inspired by Teesside tot Daisy Elliott.<\/p>\n<p>Not content with walking around 800 miles across France, Paul caught the ferry back to Britain and then cycled the 350 miles back up North reaching the Infinity Bridge at Stockton on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>He said from his home at Penshaw Court, Billingham:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels surreal being back on Teesside after being on my own for so long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m delighted to have completed this achievement and hope to have raised up to \u00a34,000 in sponsorship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely harder than I imagined it would be, but I had lots of adventures along the way!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy main inspiration has been my late grandad Fred Crockett, who was also well known for walking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daisy, the one-year-old from Billingham, has a rare brain condition affecting less than one person in every million in the UK, and is now awaiting a date for a major op at Great Ormond Street Children\u2019s Hospital in London.<\/p>\n<p>Paul undertook the sponsored walk in aid of the Sick Children\u2019s Trust, which provides free accommodation close to hospitals for families.<\/p>\n<p>As reported, his adventure included seeing the 33-year-old have to run away from a large snake &#8211; his \u201conly phobia\u201d &#8211; and climb 2,250m in the Alps.<\/p>\n<p>Paul, who lives in Billingham with partner of three years Jody Lyons, tweeted and blogged his progress along the way.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>He also posted an array of snaps &#8211; including many of his injured feet and spectacular views.<\/p>\n<p>Paul started his walk in Monte Carlo on September 31, and walked all the way to Le Havre Ferry Terminal.<\/p>\n<p>Like his two previous walks which he completed in the UK, Paul hass had no support crew &#8211; relying on the kindness of others, or camping along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Back on Teesside proud dad Mike has been keeping in touch with his son through texts and Twitter.
