Fun is at the heart of a new initiative to get families in Teesside fit and active together.

Aimed at families with kids aged 11 to 18, the free, weekly sessions run by local youth work provider BCT Aspire and Billingham Rugby Club include touch rugby, dodgeball, multi-sports, group walks and much more, all in a safe, non-competitive environment. The aim is to get families more active and spending quality time together.

Paul Burgum of BCT Aspire said: “This isn’t just for the kids. We want to show that families can get out and about and get fit together, so we really do encourage the adults to join in too. So far, we’ve had a great response, and everyone has loved the chance to take part in sports they might not have tried before. There’s no commitment, no outlay – all the kit is provided, it’s free and you can just turn up.”

Matthew Kirby of Billingham Rugby Club added: “It’s a brilliant way to give rugby a go. We have experienced coaches and our aim with this initiative is to inspire a love of sport in an encouraging and supportive environment. It’s been great so far. In fact, one young person has already decided to join the girls’ rugby team on the back of these fun sessions.”

The initiative is supported by the National Lottery and Sport England, and is already running at Greenwood Road, Billingham, on Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The activities are free to all, and there is no need to book.
